When I first purchased a Sweet Japanese Girl Solid Facial Cleanser, I was a little perplexed as to how I was supposed to use the product properly. Online research only hindered my knowledge on the subject because I found so many opposing suggestions, and Lush themselves didn't really give any indication of a definitive way to use it effectively. Luckily, through a mixture of trial and error, I discovered the best way of using the solid bar, which ultimately produced great results.
When it came to Baby Face, I was already armed with the know-how and had high expectations about what the product would heed, especially given my positive experience with other solid cleansers.
Although this doesn't really have anything to do with the effectiveness of the product, and certainly wouldn't influence my overall opinion on the cleanser, I find this solid cleanser rather creepy. There's something oddly evil-looking about the face, despite it's wonderfully light fragrance and gentle texture.
Made using a combination of cocoa butter, shea butter, avocado butter and extra virgin coconut oil, this collection of natural body conditioners help to moisturise and soften your skin, without clogging up your pores with preservatives or other chemical ingredients. Avocado butter is a rich, nourishing element that melts very easily at body temperature, helping to make Baby Face a really effective solid alternative; the coconut oil compliments the fruit's natural moisturising properties and helps to soften and soothe irritated or dried skin. Altogether, these different butters and oils work really well at removing dirt that's clogging pores and helps the skin to replace this with the natural moisture needed to give you a clean and clear complexion.
As well as the moisturising properties, Baby Face also contains tangerine oil, which not only gives it a wonderful scent, but helps to flush out unwanted debris nestling in your pores. It also tones your skin, revitalises your complexion and leaves it feeling rejuvenated and uplifted, while the vanilla absolute compliments the sweet orange scent and leaves you feeling beautiful.
To use, you can do one of two things: firstly, Lush recommend that you massage this onto your face before removing it gently with a damp cloth. This helps to gently remove dirt while moisturising your skin and leaving it feeling beautiful. I was so impressed with how clean and clear my skin felt, even after the initial use. At the time, I was suffering from an outburst of nasty-looking spots, yet the redness and prominence of these were greatly reduced overnight after I had used this before bed.
For those who suffer from dry complexions, I also find both this and Sweet Japanese Girl work wonders as solid moisturisers. I tend to massage this onto my face and leave it on. At first, your face does feel a little greasy, but within 10-15 minutes the oils have been absorbed into the skin and you're left with beautifully soft and supple-feeling skin. My complexion felt really radiant and nourished after using the cleanser in this way, although I would only recommend doing this once or twice a week, as doing it every day would no doubt clog up your pores with excess oil and make your complexion rather oily.
The only aspect that makes this product a little tricky, is the fact that it melts very easily. Whereas with most massage bars, it takes a few seconds/minutes for your body heat to get to work and melt the oils, this cleanser is incredibly sensitive and you only have to touch it for the oils to transfer onto your skin. For this reason, I'd recommend that you store it somewhere cool and try not to handle it for longer than is needed.
To me, Baby Face smells like white chocolate orange - a beautiful, subtle scent that's equally sexy and uplifting. It reminds me a little of the Merry Xmas Massage Bar Lush released a few years back. With it's versatility and the fact that solid cleansers tend to last a lot longer than their liquid counterparts (a good 3-4 months for me), this is great value and one I hope will make a reappearance in the coming months.
