FUN With A Twist

Posted on 11:55 by tony

As part of Lush's usual range, the company have a selection of five different scented FUN Bars that are available all year round. They are Pink FUN, which is a fruity candy smell, Yellow FUN, which has a vanilla scent, Red FUN, which is mandarin and orange, Green FUN, which possesses a lemon and lime scent, and Blue FUN, which offers a lavender scent.

Being one of the most versatile products they offer, as well as being good value for money, FUN is a wonderful concept that offers affordable cosmetics for those that aren't lucky enough to have their pockets lined with gold. Working as a shampoo, shower gel and bubble bar, a small 100g bar of FUN should be a steal at £5 a pop. But is it?

Recently, Lush extended it's family of FUN and released a limited edition Gold bar as part of their Christmas 2013 range, promising to release other uniquely scented variations in the near future. Two weeks ago, Lush kept their promise and released a brand new edition - FUN With A Twist.

Initially, I was overwhelmed with excitement about this new product. Not only did it look beautiful - a decorative bright orange and deep purple dough, moulded and twisted together to make the most attractive FUN bar to date, but Lush described it as possessing both the Twilight and Dragon's Egg fragrances - two of my favourite smells to come from Lush.
For those unfamiliar with these two smells (how is that possible?!), Twilight is a beautiful creamy, malty lavender aroma with elements of tonka to give it a sensual but vanillary note, while Dragon's egg offers a zesty, sherbet-y, playful burst of lemon and lime. Two completely different smells; two equally gorgeous aromas.

When my FUN With A Twist arrived, I was immediately bowled over by it's scent - both of the different fragrances were clearly defined and they were equally potent in the wrapper. Up close, you could pick out the Twilight when sniffing the purple section, and the Dragon's Egg on the orange. Strangely, when smelling them together, it was the Twilight that shone through, yet it was the Dragon's Egg scent that came through more when being used in the bath.

As with all of the FUN bars, I like to use mine as a replacement for more expensive bath ballistics, when I'm after a short bath as opposed to a longer soak. So I pulled off a generous sized chunk and crumbled it under the running tap. Immediately my bath tub began to fill with fluffy, zesty bubbles and the water merged into a lovely shade of orange. Unfortunately, both the colour of the water and the overall scent was lost quite a bit once my bath had been run, and I found that I could barely detect much of the fragrance at all within a matter of minutes.

Secondly, whereas other Fun bars work almost as well as a bubble bar and leave my skin smooth to the touch, I found this one was very drying and the water felt rather rigid, almost as if I'd dissolved a piece of soap in the tub. Most of the bubbles stayed until the end of the experience, but the colour of the water turned a murky orange colour and my skin didn't seem to benefit from these aspects at all.

On my second attempt at using this, I opted to use FUN With A Twist as a shower gel/soap and found that it lathered up quite well. I had to experiment with how much water to add to get a good lather going but it did seem to work very much like all of the other FUN bars I've tried. The lather is much thicker in consistency, and may need a little coaxing to spread across your skin, but the compressed format of the product means that a tiny piece will go a lot further than your usual splodge of shower gel and this makes it worthwhile.

Using it in this way meant that I was able to see the specks of glitter that are distributed throughout the bar, and these tended to stay on my skin, although there was very little in the way of lustre and I couldn't find any on my skin once I'd rinsed myself off.

Lavender, lemon and bergamot oils are just some of the ingredients used to try and help make FUN a moisturising, uplifting and refreshing product. While the scents are true to the original aromas, these smells were somewhat lost during use and I wouldn't say that this was the best product to use if you wanted to improve the condition of your skin.
Overall, fans of these scents will no doubt be rather interested in trying out a new product, and if I was judging on smell and design alone, it would win many awards. However, I was a little disappointed with it's productivity and I feel the gimmick of FUN doesn't deter from the fact that I'd get a lot more out of a bubble bar, even if it works out more expensive.

Quantitative Ingredients: Talc, Cornflour, Glycerine, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lemon Oil, Bergamot Oil, Jasmine Absolute, Benzoin Resinoid, Tonka Absolute, Ylang Ylang Oil, Perfume, Citral, Geraniol, Coumarin, Linalool, Gold Glimmer Lustre, Snowflake Lustre.

Bathos Bubble Bar

Posted on 13:31 by tony

When I first involved myself with forum chats and online discussions about Lush, the one product that kept making an appearance was Bathos Bubble Bar. At the time, I remember thinking that, from how it was described, it seemed like an interesting product but definitely not one I was going to get worked up over.

Lush Kitchen 2014 Design
I was lucky enough to win three of these from an eBay auction early last year, and because of how many bath products I was collecting at the time, these bars were thrown into one of my many bubble bar drawers, never to see the light of day again. That was until yesterday, when digging through my stash to find something to share a bath with, these purple beauties revealed themselves to me. What happened next, is inadvertently amazing...

Bathos Bubble Bar is a violet-scented product, packed full of violet leaf essential oil to create a strong smelling, moisturising and highly relaxing bath-buddy. Combined with jasmine absolute, which adds a sensual fragrance to the mix, and ylang ylang oil, this bar is a sophisticated and rather luxurious addition to any bath tub.

What I love about the scent of this bubble bar, is that it's completely different to the usual rose-scented products that Lush release all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love the scent of rose as much as the next person. However, it wasn't until I smelt this product for the first time, that I came to realise how much I love the smell of violet more. And smell of violet it does; in fact, Bathos gives off a very poignant smell, so for those of you who dislike strong floral smells, you may wish to avoid this.

To use any of Lush's bubble bars, you can either crumble it under running water, or as I do; hold it directly under the flow of the tap, which I find creates more bubbles. As soon as the water hits the bar, lots of bubbles start to form and disperse throughout the tub, creating mounds of beautiful, soft foam and turning the water a beautiful deep violet colour.

Bathos helped to create a wonderfully relaxing bath. Firstly, the gentle aroma of violet and jasmine filled the entire bathroom, and lingered around for the duration of the bath. This helped me to relax and ease those overworked muscles. Secondly, and probably the most impressive, the water was beautifully soft and slightly oily, which helped to moisturise my skin within minutes of being in the tub. When I begrudging climbed out of the bath at the end, my whole body felt wonderfully smooth and silky soft; I definitely didn't feel the need to moisturise after this. Finally, the beautiful violet smell permeated my skin somewhat and stayed with me for hours; I could even smell it in my hair the following day.

Ultimately, what started as a simple interest, turned into a fully-fledged love affair; I am officially in love with the Bathos Bubble Bar! It did everything I was expecting and more; made me smell wonderful, softening my skin and making me feel so much better after I was finished. I really hope that Lush see the cult following behind this product and bring it back again soon as a permanent, not just a limited edition exclusive; I would definitely like to stockpile a handful of these for the future.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Methyl Ionone, Perfume, Cocamide DEA, Violet Leaf Absolute, Rose Absolute, Jasmine Absolute, Ylang Ylang Oil, Bergamot Oil, Clove Bud Oil, *Eugenol, *Limonene, *Linalool, Green Glitter, Colour 14700, Colour 45410, Colour 17200, Colour 60725.

Twinkle Bath Bomb

Posted on 12:29 by tony

I've had this bath bomb tucked away for a couple of years now; it's one I completely forgot that I had. It was only recently, when I decided to sort out my Lush drawer, that I found it hidden beneath the larger ballistics.

Lush describe the ballistic as 'compact, and delightful, - scented with our glorious Shimmy Shimmy fragrance and shimmers tastefully with golden sparkles. This is our new favourite and we don't want it to leave us..."

Released as a Christmas product, Twinkle is a smaller sized ballistic, weighing in at just under 95g. Packed full of vanilla, sage and lavender oil, this light-green bath bomb is decorated with lots of golden lustre that coats it's outer shell and makes it super sparkle.

What first attracted me to this bath bomb, is that Lush claimed it shares the scent of both American Cream and Shimmy Shimmy, the former being one of my favourite fragrances ever. Unfortunately, the scent was predominantly on the jasmine side, so I could barely recognise the American Cream reference.

Despite this, the bath bomb does soften the water slightly and leaves your skin really soft and smelling so yummy. The scent that I picked up was a slightly fizzy, fruity smell with a slight floral element - like lemonade entwined with a hint of lavender.

Furthermore, it doesn't do much in the water; mine sunk to the bottom of the tub and dissolved really quickly, turning the water a very faint shade of green, which dispersed almost as quickly as it appeared. I suspect this is partly to do with it's age, however, there are many reports that say that the fresh variety didn't do much beyond what my one did.

Overall, this is not a bath bomb that made a particularly strong impression on me, and not one I'd want to buy again. This might be better as a larger ballistic, and I would consider trialling one if Lush strengthened the scent somewhat. However, there are many superior bath bombs that I have a choice of so it's unlikely I'll use this one again.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Perfume, Vanilla Absolute (Vanilla planifolia), Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), Lavender Oil (Lavendula hybrida) Benzoin Resinold (Styrax benzoin), Coumarin, Colour 42045, Iridescent Glitter (Polyethylene terephthalate and Acrylates copolymer.)

Vegan?: Yes.

Golden Egg Bath Bomb

Posted on 09:08 by tony

I knew when Golden Egg was first unleashed on the world, there would be a division of fans; on the one side there are those that get overly excited about anything glittery and will no doubt head straight for the most lustre-tastic looking product in the shop. Then there are those that sort of grimace at anything vaguely shiny and begin envisaging how much of a clean up there'll be after the bath. As for me, I'm one of those rarities that sort of balance precariously in the middle, hoping that lush have used the force of balance to create a product that can offer a sensual experience alongside one that's a little bit sparkly.

This product is new for 2014, although it shares it's scent with the Honey I Washed The Kids range so it's not all-together that new. What is unique about it however, is that it's composed of both a bath melt and a bath bomb, and it is this part that intrigued me the most.
The outer shell is a glorious cocoa butter and sweet orange oil melt that, on contact with hot water, immediately begins to melt and ebb into the water, creating a beautiful stream of yellow foam. As Golden Egg continues to fizz, the bath bomb centre begins to release creamy white foam, which disperses into the tub and mixes with the yellow. The result is a wonderful, golden bath that possesses just the slightest hint of lustre. There's enough glitter to create a slight shimmer on and underneath the surface, but not enough that you have to worry about scrubbing it off of you afterwards. When the bath water has been drained, there is traces of the glitter left behind, but nothing that doesn't wash away after a splash of water.

The best part about this product is that it gives off a wonderfully sumptuous and warming toffee and honey scent; it really is a rich treacly fragrance that wraps itself around you and leaves it's wonderful presence on your skin. I kept getting whiffs of this all night after I used one of these eggs, and it even stayed in my hair the following day. Furthermore, I love the fact that this product is vegan as I adore the Honey I Washed The Kids scent, yet can rarely buy any products with this smell as, like the title suggests, the products tend to contain honey. I love that Lush have found ways of producing this fragrance without using any animal derivatives.

Lush claim that because the bath melt part of Golden Egg is rather heavy, this product sinks to the bottom of the tub before resurfacing when the ballistic part starts fizzing. However, I found that mine remained on the surface, which meant I was able to watch the egg spew out it's wonderful velvety entrails.

My only negative observation is that the bath melt part of Golden Egg is nowhere near as moisturising as other Lush bath melts have been in the past. When I was in the tub, I didn't notice any beads of cocoa butter or traces of oil like I would normally expect from such a product. Although my skin felt really smooth and soft afterwards, it didn't feel anything more than what I would expect an average bath bomb to do.
Overall, this is a wonderful product, and one I will certainly buy a few more of before they are discontinued. The scent is strong and prominent throughout the entire bathing experience, something I value a lot with my bath products; definitely good value for money.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Fair Trade Organic Colombian Cocoa Butter, Citric Acid, Laureth 4, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Perfume, Sweet Wild Orange Oil, Bergamot Oil, Olive Oil, Cornflour, Lauryl Betaine, Amyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Geraniol, Lilial, *Linalool, *Limonene, Gardenia Extract, Colour 19140:1, Radiant Gold Lustre, Gold Glimmer Lustre.

Vegan?: Yes.

Space Girl Bath Bomb

Posted on 07:39 by tony

Priced at £2.10, this is by far Lush's cheapest ballistic, so I was slightly surprised when I received a full-sized product in my latest online order. Not only this, but it was immediately clear that this beautiful bath bomb had many things to offer...

As first impressions go, Space Girl nailed it. With a beautiful shade of violet and decorated with flecks of red and gold glitter, this bath bomb is a feast for the eyes. Shaped like a flying saucer (although you could argue that it is also shaped like a planet), this unworldly ballistic gives off a gorgeous fruity, floral scent.

Containing bergamot, grapefruit and almond oils, this bath bomb possesses a fruity blackcurrant scent that is slightly reminiscent of the Comforter, although there is definitely a floral undertone here, which smells of Parma Violets as well. Space Girl definitely has a multi-layered scent, which gives it a rather mature smell and will appeal to a whole range of different people.

Although this ballistic possesses a very strong scent at first, this smell quickly disperses once dissolved in water and I found the smell did not stay throughout the full duration of the bath. Neither did it linger on my skin like I was expecting, which was rather disappointing.

Like Lush's other ballistics, once this bomb hits the water, it's supposed to froth and fizz until it has dispersed. However, I was rather disappointed when mine sunk to the bottom of the bath tub, where it lay until it had been completely dissolved. The bath bomb I used was a couple of months old, but definitely not old enough to be defunct, and I'm only hoping that this was a one off.
As I've said in previous reviews, products with glitter are not off-putting for me and this ballistic is no exception. The glitter merges with the deep purple water to create a beautiful and enticing bath, and flushes away with ease, once the plug has been pulled.

Space Girl is also rumoured to contain popping candy, which offers a magical experience if your head is submerged under the water whilst it is dissolving. Unfortunately, I didn't read about this until after I had already used this ballistic, so I cannot comment on this aspect.

Overall, what started as a promising experience did turn a little sour towards the end. It is a lovely-smelling ballistic that offers value for money and creates a beautiful bathing experience. However, it does need to be used alongside another ballistic/bubble bar (The Comforter, Bathos, Blackberry) if you want a stronger-smelling experience.
Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Perfume, Grapefruit Oil, Bergamot Oil, Almond Essential Oil, Colour 17200, Colour 42053, Crimson and Red Golden Glitter, Fizzy Candy, *Limonene, *Linalool, Methyl Ionone.

Phoenix Rising Bath Bomb

Posted on 16:17 by tony

This is easily the best named product in Lush's history. There is nothing that excites or interests me more in terms of mythology than that of the phoenix. An conspicuous creature that can regenerate itself to maintain it's health. In fact, I love the symbology of the phoenix so much, that I have one etched in permanent ink across my left forearm. If it's good enough for Dumbledore, it's good enough for me.

So it may come as a surprise to some of you, to learn that I have been in receipt of a Phoenix Rising Bath Bomb for nearly a year now. And it was only last week that I finally ventured into trying it. A part of me had been savouring this moment because I knew it would harvest a full-on obsession with the bomb. There was also a little part of me that feared I would dislike this product. I had nothing to fear.

Phoenix Rising is probably one of Lush's most beautiful products. With a rich byzantium shade of purple, decorated with a splash of gold lustre, and topped with a fresh cinnamon stick, it already earns full marks for it's look.

To use, simply run a lovely hot bath, swirl the water around, then pop the ballistic in. As the water splashes on the bomb and it begins to dissolve, the water turns a stunning shade of deep purple, with elements of green towards the end.

The scent is very strong with this ballistic, which is why I love it so much. It's not a fragrance that dims over time, lingering on your skin and hair for hours after use. To me, it's a very Christmassy scent and would have fit in well with the Christmas range. But that's not say I wish it was a seasonal product! In fact, this product strangely seems appealing all year round. I first used it when the sun was shining outside, and it didn't feel out of place at all.

Phoenix Rising gently releases shea butter, cocoa butter and jojoba oil to leave your skin feather-soft. It contains cocoa butter and jojoba oil, to leave your skin really soft and smooth. You shouldn't even need to moisturise after getting out of the tub, although I always do so out of habit. Packed with exotic essential oils of fruit and spices, this bath bomb's fragrance is reminiscent of spiced rum and christmas pudding.

This is perfect for fans of the Cinders Bath Bomb, or anyone that has a particular love of cinnamon. It happens to be my favourite scent, which is why I love this product so much. I just hope, unlike The Enchanter, that Lush don't choose to discontinue this product, as it is now my current favourite bath bomb of theirs.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Icing Sugar, Cocoa Butter, PEG-6 Caprylic / Capric Glycerides, Bergamot Oil, Cassia Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Fair Trade Shea Butter, *Cinnamal, *Citral, *Limonene, *Linalool, Colour 45410, Colour 42090, Colour 77891, Colour 77510, Frosty Holly Lustre, Gold Lustre, Cinnamon Sticks.
