Marzibain Bubble Bar

Posted on 02:51 by tony

In all honesty, I've cannot justify why it has taken me so long to use one of these gorgeous bubble bars. It's not even as if I wasn't aware of the scent it possessed, which might have given me a slight pardon for my actions. All I can say, is now that I have finally managed to enjoy one of these, punishment comes in knowing that Lush have discontinued them and I have no opportunity to stock up on them.

Marzibain Bubble Bar is a firm favourite amongst Lushies, old and new, and boasts at being the only Christmas product that Lush have featured all year round. Sharing it's scent with the infamous, limited edition Snow Cake Soap, this bubble bar is a feast for the senses.

To look at, it's nothing special; a cream coloured oval block garnished with an almond in the centre. You can choose to use it for one luxurious bath, or like most of Lush's bubble bars, break it in half for two equally gorgeous experiences. Being the greedy bugger that I am, I always opt to use the whole bar, however the choice is yours.

To use any of Lush's bubble bars, you can either crumble it under running water, or as I do; hold it directly under the flow of the tap, which I find creates more bubbles. As soon as the water hits the bar, lots of bubbles start to form and disperse throughout the tub. Within a few seconds, the gorgeous fragrance begins to waft around the bathroom and seep into your senses. And what a scent it is!
As the name suggests, this bar smells exactly like marzipan - a yummy, almond-dominated scent with a spicy kick brought to you courtesy of the Benzoin Resinoid. The addition of Cassie and rose absolute oils, means that there is an edge of sophistication which gives this product a lovely, multi-layered fragrance. It's good enough to eat, and I'll admit that I was tempted to have a nibble of Marzibain before I used it in the bath.

I love this bubble bar; it turns the water a milky white colour and leaves my skin feeling moisturised and wickedly pampered. The bubbles are silky soft and encase you in their velvety grip, leaving you feeling and smelling like a queen/king. Many people have complained that this bubble bar harvests very little scent, and many were very dissappointed that it wasn't stronger than it was. However, I didn't find this at all. It was perfectly scented and the fragrance remained with me throughout the entire experience, permeating my skin so that the smell stayed with me for many hours after I had exited the bath.

The only difference I noted between this bubble bar and the shower gel and perfume variations, is that the sweetness of the Cassie absolute wasn't as dominating as it was in both of these products. This didn't make it any less gorgeous though, and only helped in cementing this as one of my all time favourite bubble bars.
Ultimately, Marzibain Bubble Bar is a highly sensual and rather sophisticated product that makes the water and your body gorgeously soft and fragrant. It's an experience I look forward to when Lush next decide to bring this back again and I'm hoping it will make a reappearance very soon.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Perfume, Cocamide DEA, Benzoin Resinoid, Cassie Absolute, Rose Absolute, Whole Almond, Benzyl Benzoate.

Vegan?: Yes.

The Witches' Ball Bubble Bar

Posted on 14:22 by tony

The Witches' Ball Bubble Bar was first made for Lush's Christmas 2008 range, and although it's made a reappearance over the years, it is only recently that I've managed to pick myself up a couple to try. It's definitely one of Lush's more quirkier products; it's not something you're likely to find in the typical high street shop, which is probably why I was so intrigued to give it a whirl.

Most often, when I invest in any of Lush's older products, I like to carry out a little research to find out the history of the product alongside the general reaction to said item. With Witches' Ball, I found there was a clear division - it's a product that normally inspires quite strong reactions (both positive and negative), so I was a little unsure what to expect when the strange-looking clump turned up at my door.

Firstly, it's definitely a unique and strangely beautiful bubble bar. With it's dark violet shell speckled with sprigs of fresh parsley and decorated with a star anise on top, it's an acquired taste. What I love about it, is that it really does conjure up thoughts of medieval witchery and the supernatural. Much like Ceridwan's Cauldron, there's something weirdly alluring about the romanticism of old-fashioned witchcraft and the occult.

Secondly, I was very intrigued to see what this bubble bar smelt like before and during my bath. Witches' Ball boasts a whole array of different opposing and complementary ingredients; cloves, black currants and cranberries, rosemary, sage, peppermint, frankincense, myrrh, benzoin and of course, fresh parsley. On paper, it's very hard to imagine what this smells like.
To me, the dominating smell here is the herbs. On first sniff, I can pick out the sage, rosemary and peppermint; the currants and cranberries add a slight sweetness to the mix, which makes the bubble bar smell very odd indeed. In fact, it's one of those products that I feel you need to try for yourself to really appreciate it's fragrance. I didn't mind the smell at all, although it's not a scent I particularly loved either.

In the bath, this bubble bar is probably one of the weakest at creating bubbles. This is no doubt due to the amount of other objects that have been packed into this average-sized product. Once the bubble bar is dissolving, an array of cloves, star anise and currants are dispersed from the product, where they float down and sit at the bottom of the tub. While you're watching this happen, it all seems quite intriguing. However, once you get into the bath, you realise that these inanimate objects are actually rather annoying. There are so many of them that you can't help but sit on at least one, and it's nearly always the pointed, star-shaped anise, which can be a rather painful experience.

Annoyingly, when you attempt to remove these from the bath, you end up fighting a losing battle as these irritating clumps of food spin off in all directions and are nearly impossible to grapple with. My suggestion would be to either direct them into one area of the bath and just make sure you don't move for the duration of the experience. Or you could attempt to contain the currants and cloves by popping the bubble bar in a thin sock and tying it under the running tap. The only issue here is that you tend to lose a lot of the scent as this comes from all of the fresh herbs and spices, all of which will be trapped in the sock and not in your bath tub.

Finally, when fully dissolved, Witches' Ball turns the bath water a clear purple colour with a thin layer of bubbles on top. Unfortunately, these bubbles disappear rather quickly which almost makes it pointless calling it a bubble bar to begin with.

Overall, I wasn't that impressed with this bubble bar. On paper, Witches' Ball is an intriguing and unique product. I'd even say that the inclusion of fresh currants is a marvellous idea. However, Lush need to work on how they can incorporate these sweet, juicy fruits into a product without cluttering the entire bath tub with them. This product is definitely an example of 'style over substance'.

Although the smell was quite pleasant, and it was by no means the worst bath in the world, my skin didn't feel any softer than it did before I had jumped in the tub. Furthermore, the scent was almost completely lost by the time I had dried myself off. This is definitely not a bubble bar I will be buying again. Although, if Lush ever choose to release other products using this fragrance, I would definitely jump at the chance of trying them out.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Dried Cranberries, Dried Currants, Dried Star Anise, Perfume, Peppermint Oil, Rosemary Oil, Sage Oil, Myrrh Gum, Olibanum Gum, Benzoin Gum, Cloves, Dried Parsley, *Limonene, Colour 42090, Colour 45410.

Dear John Bubble Bar

Posted on 13:32 by tony

After experiencing Dear John for the first time this week in the form of a soap, I was really interested to see if the scent differed in any way when presented in a different format. You tend to find in scent families, such as the Karma range, that particular ingredients are more prominent, depending on the type of cosmetic you're dealing with. For example, I think that Karma Kream is a very sweet rendition where the fruit is at the forefront, whereas in the liquid perfume the patchouli dominates the overall scent.

Despite the fact that this scent family first made an appearance well over a decade ago (when the company were known as Cosmetics To Go), the Dear John Bubble Bar is a brand new product to feature this fragrance.
Unfortunately, my experience of this bubble bar was immediately tarnished when I discovered that for the £3.75 I had invested, I was only getting a bubble bar of 30g. To put this in perspective - all of the other bubble bars that Lush offer for the same price tag, range from 70g - 200g in weight, meaning that you're getting a lot less bang for your buck with this one.

Much like the Rose Bubble Bar that Lush brought out during their Mother's Day range this year, I assumed that perhaps they had concentrated the smell in Dear John so that the bar offered a far stronger scent than you would normally expect in the bigger bars. I was also told that despite it size, Rose was supposed to create the same amount of bubbles as it's bigger siblings so I was expecting this as well with Dear John.

Unfortunately, Dear John didn't do either of these two things. In the bath it produced an average amount of bubbles and I found that the scent dispersed quite quickly so that ten minutes into my soak, I could barely detect the fragrance at all. Furthermore, I found that the water was not in the least bit moisturising as I've come to expect from bubble bars and my skin felt rather parched upon leaving the tub.

On a positive note, I actually preferred the smell of this bubble bar to the soap of the same name. I found that it was far sweeter to begin with - the citrus element was more prominent which gave it a very uplifting, fruity scent. There was also a stronger thread of cedarwood throughout which gave it a fuller, more complex earthy smell than the soap. Finally, the coffee scent was balanced so that it gave the bar a spicy, slightly smokey smell without making it bitter.

As I said in my review of the soap, despite there being a whole host of ingredients that make up the Dear John scent, you're presented with a rather mild, comforting smell - not the heavy, overpowering one you would expect from so many different layers.

Overall, despite loving the smell that Dear John Bubble Bar offers, I was disappointed with the outcome and would not invest in one of these again. Having done a little research, I know that Lush used to offer customers a ballistic and shower gel with this scent, and I only hope that they bring these out sometime soon as I feel I would probably enjoy them more.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Perfume, Vetivert Oil, Coriander Oil, Clove Bud Oil, Cedarwood Oil, Ground Coffee, Clove Powder, Eugenol, Farnesol, Limonene, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal, Whole Coffee Bean.

Vegan?: Yes.

Two Timing Tart Bubble Bar

Posted on 12:56 by tony
Cosmetics, much like people, make their first impressions in many different ways. Some products have beautiful fragrances, eye-catching designs or vivid colours, others get noticed through well-thought out packaging, celebrity endorsements and word of mouth. Where this product is concerned, it's name is enough to gage a reaction and entice you to find out more.

Two Timing Tart Bubble Bar is a product that has made only a few reappearances since it's initial release in 2005, but has left a large impression on those of us lucky enough to have had the opportunity to try it out. Showcasing a predominantly bright pink body, this is a simple design for a bubble bar, but one that grabs your attention immediately.

Lush describe this bar as harvesting a fragrance of 'fruit tarts with coconut cream, with a touch of aphrodisiac jasmine'. On initial sniff, I can definitely detect a creamy, coconut scent, however I wouldn't describe the rest of the smell as being particularly 'fruit tart-ish'. I can pick out the presence of the jasmine here and the whole aroma is surrounded with the gentle, dry scent of the geranium - it's not as potent or overpowering as with other floral products from Lush, but it's definitely there in the forefront.

There is also a hint of strawberry here, but not a natural, fresh sort of strawberry - more of a synthetic smell. For those of you who've had the opportunity to try out the now-discontinued, Strawberry Santa Shower Jelly, this bubble bar shares it's fragrance with this, and it does smell almost identical. Combined, the scent possesses a gorgeous feminine aroma that fills your bathroom and stays with you throughout the duration of the bath.

Although one of Lush's smallest bubble bars, sporting a diameter of just under 5cm, this product can still be used across two baths and produces enough bubbles each time to make it worth your while. As you can see from my pictures, this bar is very easy to crumble, and is actually one of the softest bubble bars I have ever received from Lush. Whether you choose to spread this across two baths, or use it in one, the product heeds a mountain-ful of beautiful bubbles and turns the water an attractive shade of pink.

There has been much debate amongst Lushies as to how best to use a bubble bar, and I've come under a bit of brunt recently, with people commenting on the way that I choose to use them myself. Like every other bubble bar, Two Timing Tart can work in a number of ways. With this one, as it had near-on crumbled by the time I got around to using it, I chose to crumble it under the flow of the water and watch as the bubbles began to increase, ten-fold.

This bar filled my bath with beautifully light and silky-soft bubbles and the lovely pink water only served to add vibrancy to the experience. Unlike a lot of Lush bubble bars, this one maintained it's mountains of bubbles throughout my entire bath, and I even had to rinse myself down with the shower hose when I was finished.

Once I had towelled myself down, the wonderful fragrance stayed with me for a few hours and I could even smell it in my hair the next day. It also left my skin feeling wonderfully soft, as I would expect with all of Lush's bubble bars, while my muscles felt relaxed and well-rested.

I think fans of Dorothy, Mumkin and Ruby Red Slippers will no doubt love this bubble bar, as although they don't possess the same scent, they do all have that gentle sweet, floral element about them. Although this was an enjoyable experience, and I would recommend that people try this if they can, I'm much more of a fan of stronger, more unique fragrances, and I'd rather indulge in the likes of Bathos or Pop In The Bath.
Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar (Tartaric acid), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Coconut Cream (Cocos nucifera), Perfume, Cocamide DEA, Benzoin Resinoid (Styrax benzoin), Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum officinale), Geranium Oil (Pelargonium crispum), Colour 18050.

Bathos Bubble Bar

Posted on 13:31 by tony

When I first involved myself with forum chats and online discussions about Lush, the one product that kept making an appearance was Bathos Bubble Bar. At the time, I remember thinking that, from how it was described, it seemed like an interesting product but definitely not one I was going to get worked up over.

Lush Kitchen 2014 Design
I was lucky enough to win three of these from an eBay auction early last year, and because of how many bath products I was collecting at the time, these bars were thrown into one of my many bubble bar drawers, never to see the light of day again. That was until yesterday, when digging through my stash to find something to share a bath with, these purple beauties revealed themselves to me. What happened next, is inadvertently amazing...

Bathos Bubble Bar is a violet-scented product, packed full of violet leaf essential oil to create a strong smelling, moisturising and highly relaxing bath-buddy. Combined with jasmine absolute, which adds a sensual fragrance to the mix, and ylang ylang oil, this bar is a sophisticated and rather luxurious addition to any bath tub.

What I love about the scent of this bubble bar, is that it's completely different to the usual rose-scented products that Lush release all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love the scent of rose as much as the next person. However, it wasn't until I smelt this product for the first time, that I came to realise how much I love the smell of violet more. And smell of violet it does; in fact, Bathos gives off a very poignant smell, so for those of you who dislike strong floral smells, you may wish to avoid this.

To use any of Lush's bubble bars, you can either crumble it under running water, or as I do; hold it directly under the flow of the tap, which I find creates more bubbles. As soon as the water hits the bar, lots of bubbles start to form and disperse throughout the tub, creating mounds of beautiful, soft foam and turning the water a beautiful deep violet colour.

Bathos helped to create a wonderfully relaxing bath. Firstly, the gentle aroma of violet and jasmine filled the entire bathroom, and lingered around for the duration of the bath. This helped me to relax and ease those overworked muscles. Secondly, and probably the most impressive, the water was beautifully soft and slightly oily, which helped to moisturise my skin within minutes of being in the tub. When I begrudging climbed out of the bath at the end, my whole body felt wonderfully smooth and silky soft; I definitely didn't feel the need to moisturise after this. Finally, the beautiful violet smell permeated my skin somewhat and stayed with me for hours; I could even smell it in my hair the following day.

Ultimately, what started as a simple interest, turned into a fully-fledged love affair; I am officially in love with the Bathos Bubble Bar! It did everything I was expecting and more; made me smell wonderful, softening my skin and making me feel so much better after I was finished. I really hope that Lush see the cult following behind this product and bring it back again soon as a permanent, not just a limited edition exclusive; I would definitely like to stockpile a handful of these for the future.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Methyl Ionone, Perfume, Cocamide DEA, Violet Leaf Absolute, Rose Absolute, Jasmine Absolute, Ylang Ylang Oil, Bergamot Oil, Clove Bud Oil, *Eugenol, *Limonene, *Linalool, Green Glitter, Colour 14700, Colour 45410, Colour 17200, Colour 60725.

Competition Winner Announcement!

Posted on 13:37 by tony

Thank you to everyone who has been patient with me. I did promise to announce the winner on Saturday night, but a few things stopped me from doing so.

The main reason is that I was rather annoyed that someone reported me to Tumblr, who then told me I was breaking the rules by promoting a site that isn't affiliated with Tumblr.

For this reason, I'll be unable to post any more competitions on there for a while, until I figure out a way to do so that isn't against their policies.

I will still be holding regular competitions, but it'll only be through here, so please keep checking back regularly so you can be a part of the next awesome giveaway. I've already selected my products and have been organising them for this week, so I should have a new and exciting competition up in the next few days.

As per usual, to make it fair, I've picked a winner from a random number generator;

Congratulations to the anonymous entry with the email address - Dig66@yahoo.com. You are the winner of all of these wonderful goodies! An email will be coming your way very soon.

Thank you to everyone who entered, and check back here over the next few days for my next Lush giveaway!

Tulip Mum Reusable Bubble Bar

Posted on 09:27 by tony

...And so I reach the last seasonal review. With all of the new Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Easter products, I feel like I've spent the last month living in my bath. My flatmates would argue that I've probably spent more time in their tub, than I have in my own bed, and there's already talks about the 'dreaded' water bill at the end of this month. I wish I could say that I've left the best until last but unfortunately this is not the case.

Tulip Mum Reusable Bubble Bar is a pretty looking product, and fits in nicely alongside The Mum and Madame Butterfly. Much like both of these other limited edition 'wands', this one has also taken a popular scent from Lush's regular range, and repackaged it for a seasonal release.

Possessing a blend of ylang ylang, clary sage and jasmine oils, this product shares it's scent with the infamous Sex Bomb Ballistic. The ingredients have been combined to help you unwind and clear your thoughts - exactly what a hard-working mother might need. The jasmine is the key ingredient here as, known for being an aphrodisiac, it'll help to ease stress and anxiety. The other ingredients merge together to create a slightly spicy, and very gentle, floral fragrance.
As with the other two reusable bubble bars, the Tulip Mum is very reasonably priced. For £5.25, this bubble bar can be used multiple times, making it a lot cheaper than a normal bubble bar or ballistic. Lush claim that you can reuse these bars a good five or six times, although I found that this one would probably only squeeze three or four baths out in total.

As you can see from my video, I used Tulip Mum by holding it under the tap, where it immediately beings to spew out a nice amount of soft bubbles. If you're not a fan of too many bubbles, you can opt to swish this around the tub instead. The great thing about all of Lush's reusable bubble bars, is that you have complete control over deciding how strong you wish your bath to be, meaning that this bubble bar can last as long as you want it to.

Unfortunately, this bubble bar didn't change the colour of the water at all, which is disappointing when you consider how beautiful Sex Bomb is, when it's been dissolved. Furthermore, the fragrance of the bubble bar is very weak and I could barely smell anything throughout my bath. I ended up adding another ballistic 10 minutes into the experience so I could indulge is some kind of fragrance whilst bathing.

The bubble were nice and soft and they did help to moisturise and soften my skin, but the whole experience was rather dissappointing. This is definitely the weakest reusable bubble bar that I've tried so far, and would not consider buying it again.
Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Carbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Bicarbonate, Lauryl Betaine, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Glycerine, Glycerine, Cornflour, Citric Acid, Perfume, Lemon Peel Powder, Synthetic Musk, Jasmine Absolute, Clary Sage Oil, Ylang Ylang Oil, Lilial, Methyl Ionone, *Limonene, *Linalool, Colour 14700, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Glycerine.

The Brightside Bubble Bar

Posted on 09:24 by tony
There are rare moments during my obsession with Lush, when a product or experience has that extra 'wow' factor that sets it apart from most of the other items available from their range. The Brightside is one such product. Originally released for the Easter 2013 range, this bubble bar proved to be so popular that it was brought back again this year, with many rumours circling that this will be made a permanent member of the Lush family. I really hope that it does.

This generously sized bubble bar is enough for more than one refreshing bath. In fact, it is the same size as the infamous Comforter Bar, which will easily give you four incredibly soft and super bubblelicious baths. Priced up at a very reasonable £4.50, this bar is somewhat of a brick in size, so you're definitely getting your money's worth when purchasing one of these.
Named after the much loved Monty Python song, this product is definitely something that'll cheer you up and wash away those winter blues. This bubble bar is packed full of refreshing, uplifting and hydrating ingredients to give you a wonderfully satisfying bath.

Firstly, The Brightside features Tangerine Oil, which not only gives the bar it's wonderfully zesty fragrance, but can also aid digestion and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Next up there's Mandarin Oil; a clean and zesty scent which is believed to inspire positive energy as well as improving mood and restoring equilibrium. It is said to help relieve stress and restlessness as well as improving circulation and maintaining water balance in the skin. Finally, there's Bergamot Oil - an uplifting oil that works alongside the mandarin oil to combat stress and stimulate circulation in the body, which in turn can relieve muscle tension.

Together, these ingredients help to create a beautifully uplifting, calm bathing experience, which in turn makes you feel pretty damn wonderful once you've prized yourself out of the tub. Furthermore, these ingredients also help to soften the water and product lots of fruity, velvety bubbles that leave your skin feeling beautifully smooth and moisturised.
Its scent is very orangey and zesty; it reminds me of freshly peeled satsumas when they're perfectly in season; a sweet (and slightly fizzy) smell with a sugary, sherberty bite. Much like orange Fanta but with a bit more of a warm, well-rounded citrus fragrance.

What is great about The Brightside this year, is that Lush have obviously improved upon the recipe, as last year I found that some of the bars tended to be a little too compressed for my liking, and it was often difficult to get the bars to crumble properly under the tap. However, this year the bars are much softer and work perfectly in the bath. They crumble and dissolve with ease and don't leave any pieces in the bottom of your tub.

Much like last year, this product creates a vivid orange-coloured bath, which immediately looks warm, summery and very inviting. This beautiful shade of tangelo remains with you for the duration of the bath and washes away at the end, without leaving any staining on the tub.

Overall, I think The Brightside is a all-rounded perfect product. Firstly, it's stunning to look at and will immediately draw your attention to itself in the shop. The beautiful swirls of reds, oranges and yellows make it perhaps the most gorgeous bubble bar I have ever seen come from Lush. Furthermore, the scent is very strong before and during the bath, but it's a very light, refreshing smell so it's not at all overpowering. This beautiful fragrance remains throughout the entire bathing experience and lingers on your skin for a few hours afterwards.

The Brightside left me feeling invigorated, highly moisturised and very happy when I got out of the tub. It's a product that needs to be made permanent as I just don't think I can go another year before being able to try this again. Lush should definitely create a shower gel using this same fragrance, as it is simply beautiful. However, this would mean that I would most probably spend the duration of my life in the shower, smothering it all over myself for hours at a time. Alongside Ponche, this is quite easily, the best new product to come from Lush in a good many years. Simply amazing.

Quantitative Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Cream of Tartar, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl Betaine, Sicilian Mandarin Oil, Tangerine Oil, Bergamot Oil, *Limonene, *Linalool, Perfume, Gardenia Extract, Colour 14700, Colour 15510, Sicilian Mandarin Oil.
