This was the first year I was properly involved in the countdown to Lush's perfume release, which was a highly exciting process for me. On the one hand, I was willing Lush to release all of my favourite scents; The Comforter, Calacas, Ponche etc..., but a huge part of me was thinking; If Lush release all of my favourite scents, I'm going to be well and truly bankrupt!
As it was, I ended up spending a fortune anyway because the fragrances they did release, were all ones I loved and wanted to stock up on!
Lush started out by saying that they would be releasing 5 scents, 4 of which had been forum specials before, and 1 which had never been released as a perfume. Immediately, my mind screamed 'PONCHE!' for the latter perfume, and I was very very happy when my prayers were answered.
Ponche is a party fragrance, bursting with fruity energy and the perfect perfume for those hot summer months. This fragrance matches Lush's best-selling Ponche shower gel, and is inspired by a boozy fruit punch that’s traditional in Mexico. Refreshing and juicy, Ponche is a joyful fiesta of citrus fragrance.
Next up, and perhaps the one I was most excited about, was Calacas. This fruity little number smells deliciously of lime and jelly beans. Lime and neroli oils give Calacas its citrusy kick, and Lush add frankincense, or olibanum, to give a deeper richness to the perfume.
Thirdly, we have the wonderful Snow Fairy, which has been released in many different formats over the years but never as a liquid perfume. If you love pear drops, candy floss and Dolly mixtures, you'll love this scent.
Next, we have a perfume that made an appearance amidst last year's forum party release: Snowcake. Snowcake has all the delicious warmth of an almond pastry or a crisp macaroon, with sweet benzoin resinoid, floral rose absolute and the blackcurrant fruitiness of cassie absolute. This is a cosy, snuggly fragrance that’s just perfect to see you through a long cold winter. Finally, another perfume that came out alongside Snowcake last year: Rose Jam. Perhaps the most sophisticated of the five, Lush have taken real Turkish rose oil and rose absolute, added a hint of zingy lemon and a dash of geranium oil, which brings its own sweet, floral and slightly sharp note to the mix. The resulting fragrance is rich and fruity – a modern, youthful perfume that’s nothing like the old-fashioned rose scents found on granny’s dressing table.
So there we have it; five beautiful perfumes so different in their scents yet so alike in their warming qualities. My favourite is definitely Calacas, probably because I love sweet, child-like scents.
As you can see from my pictures, I went a little overboard and bought a whole heap of them that should hopefully tide me over until next year - and maybe a few more years after that... Keep your eyes peeled for individual reviews of these perfumes over the coming months.
